Pools Designed Around Your Site

A fibreglass pool is only as good as the shell that goes in the ground. As pool builders in Wollongong, we manufacture every shell to order for your specific site at Billabong Pool Co., not pulled off a shelf and squeezed into whatever space you've got. That means the pool is built around your yard rather than the other way around.

Wollongong throws up its own set of challenges: escarpment runoff on elevated blocks, sandy ground closer to the coast and plenty of yards where the only way in is through a narrow side gate. Before your shell is even ordered, we walk the site, check drainage and access, and lock in the excavation plan so there are no surprises once the truck turns up.

While your shell is being built off-site, we're not sitting idle either. Council approvals, site prep and scheduling all happen in parallel, so your project keeps moving instead of stalling between stages.

One thing we won't compromise on is continuity. Mitch or Jacob will confirm your start date directly and the same crew stays with your job from first dig to final handover, so there's no handballing between subcontractors and no re-explaining your project to someone new halfway through.

Excavation to Handover

Once your shell arrives on site, the transformation happens fast. Day one starts with excavation from 7am, and while it's dusty work for a day or two, we keep the site secured and tidy throughout so it doesn't disrupt your household. From there the shell is craned into position and the build starts taking real shape.

Filling and backfilling happen together, with water going into the shell as we pack material around it so the pressure stays even on both sides. A concrete bond beam goes in around the edge next, and this needs five to seven days to cure properly before plumbing, filtration, paving or landscaping can begin. On Wollongong sites this stage matters even more than usual, since sandy soil and high water tables closer to the coast affect how a pool sits and settles.

Handover isn't just handing over keys. We walk you through your equipment and water care step by step and record the session so you have it to reference later. If you want lighting, filtration upgrades or heating built in, these get integrated during the build rather than added afterwards, and the same applies to landscaping through our in-house team. Once the pool is finished, we're still available by phone for anything that comes up.

  • How long does the whole pool build take from start to finish?

Most projects run for several weeks once excavation begins, though the exact timeline depends on your site conditions and any custom features you've chosen. Excavation and shell placement typically take the first one to two days and the concrete bond beam then needs five to seven days to cure before we move on. After curing we complete plumbing, filtration, paving and landscaping, which can take another one to two weeks depending on scope. We'll give you a realistic schedule upfront so you know what to expect rather than a vague estimate that shifts as we go.

  • Will sandy soil or a high water table cause problems with my pool?

These conditions are common across parts of Wollongong and we plan for them rather than treating them as obstacles. Sandy ground and elevated water tables change how backfilling and drainage need to be handled, so we assess your site before any work starts and adjust our approach accordingly. This might mean different backfill material, extra drainage measures or a modified filling sequence to keep pressure balanced around the shell. Getting this right early prevents movement or settling issues later, which is far more important than rushing the installation.

  • Can I add pool heating or upgraded filtration after the pool is already built?

You can, but it's usually more cost effective and less disruptive to include these during the original build. When heating, filtration upgrades or additional equipment are planned in from the start, we can integrate the plumbing and wiring before the surrounding paving and landscaping go in. Adding them afterwards often means digging up finished areas of your yard, which adds both time and cost. If you're even considering these features, it's worth raising them early so we can build the groundwork in without extra disruption down the track.

The Billabong Story

Every person on the Billabong team has seen a pool project fall apart the same way. Not from bad workmanship, but from gaps. A builder who excavates and leaves, a separate company for finishing, a planner who hands off drawings and moves on to the next client. By the time something needs fixing, nobody quite owns the problem and the homeowner is stuck chasing three different phone numbers for one answer.

That experience is what led to Billabong Pool Co. Rather than growing into a large operation with departments and handoffs, the business stayed built around five people who each own a stage of the process and stay involved in the others. Chad works with you first, shaping your ideas and site into a plan that's ready to build. Mitch designs the pool and builds it, with an eye for residential and boutique projects that need a high end finish. Jacob keeps construction on schedule and holds the work to a consistent standard. Andrew brings the precision that excavation and installation demand, since getting the groundwork right sets up everything that follows. Ellie manages contracts, approvals and scheduling with the same care a former lawyer would bring to any agreement.

None of this happened by accident. It's a structure built specifically to close the gaps that usually cause pool projects to go wrong, and it's why five people can manage your build from first phone call to final handover without anything getting lost along the way..
